I bought a cockatiel for my husband as a gift, first off I was told it was a male when I first brought it home, wrong I went to a bird professional and found out it was a female, bought a second one, was told it was a male it too was a female, it was very mean and not hand fed, so took it back, well the grey one I had first seemed ok, but screamed a lot, and just today I uncovered her and she was at the bottom of the cage dead, I will never buy anything from petland again.

How did the "bird expert" know the gender? Did you have blood tests done?

Tiels are NOT sexually dimorphic and the only way to be sure is by a blood test. Some breeders can feel the pelvis and can get a good idea but this method is not 100% accurate.

ok, I understand the misrepresenting the genders problem. But, honestly...From the sounds of it the first one could have just as easily died from bad husbandry methods on your part.

Especially with birds even if it was sick when it left Petland's hands, they probably would not have known. Birds in general are masters at hiding when they are sick, and usually by the time they display symptoms, they are in some serious trouble.

I am so sorry you lost your pets. I am going through something similar with my puppies.
