I will never buy anything from Petland ever again

Petland complaint by Ismaelh
I bought a puppy from them and that is only because he was on sale and he looked almost exactly how I wanted him to look. He is a Dalmatian. They waved this full warranty crap in front of my face and me like an idiot I believed them.

They promised that the puppy was perfectly healthy. The warranty was supposed to last a year. well after a couple of months the puppy's stomach began to swell up. i thought it was parasites so I took him to the vet. The vet said he had a heart murmur and that he could not digest sodium so his stomach began to swell.

I went back to Petland and asked them what there warranty would cover since the sickness is congenital. They basically said I was screwed that they were not responsible. They sold me a sick Dog and they didn't feel they were responsible! Their warranty is not worth crap.

The good news is the puppy is doing fine. I am keeping him on medications and on a special diet.

Sadly he still has the heart murmur but not like Petland would care.

I would like people to know that I worked for PetLand for almost a year. The manager before me left because of the owner's business practices and so did I.

PetLand is a franchise. Each owner chooses the contracts, warrenties and so forth. They have the ability to dictate the "quality control" in all sales. I will say, the owner of the store I worked for was very much into the money aspect of the business and not the welfare of the animals. This caused many issues with his managers, and he went through 6 in a year. He went bankrupt and the franchise went up for sale.

The new owner is said to be making drastic changes in how the store is to be run, including not only sales of animals, but adoptions of rescue pets.

I think that the quality of the store really depends on the owners.

Just because a store sells an animal doesn't mean they can see the future. Some genetic issues come up later and are breed specific. Can they make an effort to sell the healthiest animals possible? Yes they can by limiting the amount of animals, having a proper quarentine unit and having a qualified Vet on call.

Please remember, people who sell in the paper can also sell sick animals to unsuspecting people. Some have even been arrested for running puppy mills.

I am not trying to say that is is better to purchase from a store or from a private person. I am saying things do happen. Sometimes employees are tied by the actions of the owners.

Here's hoping that the new owners of this PetLand make an effort to provide educated staff and healthy animals.

I used to work there and I can say that not all of the puppies were sick, and though the "managers" may know some of what they are talking about, the regular employees just learned what to say to sell a dog. Back when I worked there, we only got $5 per dog sold. I know...commision on selling dogs...CRAZY! Right!?! Well they hire young people that are sadly just trying to make a buck. Well I am not even sure where all the money goes when people buy dogs from them but it deffinately didn't go to the little people that worked there. I remember a cocker-poo that I absolutely fell in love with and it sold when the price dropped down to like $199.00. I do not remember if they still gave him all the stuff from the package or not but the people that bought him looked like they just wanted the cheapest dog their. That hurt me because I loved that dog but I couldn't refuse the sale because "Petland" was getting money. I could say not to buy from petland but I have seen worse places to buy a dog. Also, you could always rescue a pet. Petsmart does "Adopt a pet", even though they may not have a warranty plan and they may get sick, you could keep it from being put to sleep!

I bought my American Eskimo at Petland in Round Lake Beach, IL around June 28th. They told me that I get a free exam with the dog and I have to take it to their vet within 3 days. I took Mandy, my new puppy that is 10 weeks old to their vet in Gurnee on June 30th. The vet had asked me if there was anthing unusual with the puppy and I told her that I noticed that Mandy was sneezing alot. The vet informed me that on June 19th, which was her last pet visit, she had a cold. Now it is July 8th and she still is sick. Not only is Mandy sick but she has now spead this horrible cold to my other 2 dogs. Princess which is a Sheltie, she has been sneezing so much and Jordan, which is a Chow, Huskie, Lab mix is coughing up so much flem and also is sneezing really bad.

My boyfriend called the little ***, Adam that is a so called manager on July 7th and explained the problem. Adam said that he will not be responsible for our other dogs.My boyfriend said to him that you shouldn't be selling sick dogs. That scum *** Adam told my boyfriend that we should keep our dogs seperated and to be smart about it. No, dumb ***, you should be smart about it and not sell sick animals. Hey, there's an idea ADAM!!!

I then called Corporate office and spoke to stupid lazy, Lacy. She informed me that she couldn't do anything about it. By the way here's there phone number if you don't feel like getting anywhere with them. LOL 800-221-5935. I asked her, "then why are you the corporate office if you can't so anything about it." So she gets paid for nothing, cuz she is useless just like the rest of them. She told me that each store has there own owner and his name is Bill Mitchell. I called there and of coarse he isn't in. Like that doesn't suprise me. The girl that answered the phone says he comes and goes. Go figure!! Why would the owner be there if little *** Adam can handle the store for him.

I don't want to take back my dog, Mandy. I want these *** to pay for my pet visit. Mandy was $1,000.00 and now I am going to have to spend another $600.00 on Vet visits for all 3 dogs.

I will show up at Petland and shove the bill in Adam's *** and tell him that I demand for him to pay this bill and if he doesn't I will hit every local news station there is out there. I will also stand in front of Petland with a huge *** sign with a picture of Mandy and say Petland sells sick puppies. Let's see if they sell another sick puppy again. I will have there front doors closed so quickly, they won't know what to do. Good luck Petland cuz here I come.

Please know now that puppies from ANY pet store are from puppy mills, and most likely sick!

Thank you for sharing your dal's story and maybe spread it around elsewhere to raise awareness of the mills.

I'm glad he's okay!

You're the idiot for buying a family member because they were on sale. Of course he was sick, they're trying to make a profit and medication costs money.

Shame on YOU!
